Jiangtao (Gene) Wen received the BS, MS and Ph.D. degrees with honors from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1992, 1994 and 1996 respectively, all in Electrical Engineering.

From 1996 to 1998, he was a Staff Research Fellow at UCLA, where he conducted cutting-edge research on multimedia coding and communications. Many of his inventions there were later adopted by international standards such as H.263, MPEG and H.264. After UCLA, he served as the Principal Scientist of PacketVideo Corp., the CTO of Morphbius Technology Inc., the Director of Video Codec Technologies of Mobilygen Corp, the Senior Director of Technology of Ortiva Wireless and consulted for Stretch Inc. Since 2009, Dr. Wen has held a Professorship at the Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua University. 

Dr. Wen is a world-renowned expert in multimedia communication over hostile networks, video coding and communications. He has authored many widely referenced papers in related fields. Products deploying technologies that Dr. Wen developed are currently widely used worldwide. Dr. Wen holds over 30 patents with numerous others pending. A Senior Member of IEEE, Dr. Wen is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions CSVT.

  1. United States Patent 7532669 granted May 12, 2009. Video codec method in error resilient mode and apparatus
  2. United States Patent 7199735 and 7281771, granted April 3 and October 16, 2007 respectively. An advanced entropy coding technology using enumerative coding and lexicographical ordering.
  3. United States Patent 7177355, “Method for representing encoding upon coding information”, granted February 13, 2007. Advanced SKIP MB signaling for video coding.
  4. United States Patent 7006631, “Method and system for embedding binary data sequences into video bitstreams”, granted February 28, 2006. This patent is concerned with a method and system which extracts, manipulates and embeds data from a compressed and standard compliant video bitstream for digital rights management.
  5. United States Patent 6768775, “Video CODEC method in error resilient mode and apparatus therefore”, granted July 27, 2004. This patent covers the syntax, packet structure as well as the encoding and decoding algorithms of the H.263 Data Partitioned Error Resilient mode.
  6. United States Patent 6498865, “Method and device for control and compatible delivery of digitally compressed visual data in a heterogeneous communication network”, granted December 24, 2002. This patent is directed to a state-of-the-art technique for automatically manipulating a digitally compressed video bitstream such that the result is compatible with different bandwidth and error resilience requirements at a receiving point in a heterogeneous communication network.
  7. United States Patent 6426976, “Motion vector prediction method”, granted July 30, 2002. This patent is concerned with the single thread motion vector prediction technique and associated reversible variable length code codetable and packet structure that enable bi-directional decoding of motion vector information for robust video coding. The technique was used in the H. 263 Data Partitioned Error Resilient mode.
  8. United States Patent 6356661,”Method and device for robust decoding of header information in macroblock-based compressed video data”, granted March 12, 2002. This was the first patent filed by Packvideo Corp. It is directed to a way of intelligently and efficiently decode and repair, from corrupt bitstreams, header and motion information that are most critical to the quality of reconstructed video.
  9. United States Patents 6304607, 6385251, 6621869, “Error resilient video coding using reversible length codes (RVLCs)”, granted October 16, 2001 to September 16 2003. These patents are related to efficient and error resilient video coding using RVLCs, especially reversible Golomb-Rice and exp-Golomb codes, as well as decoding algorithms.

In addition, 19 granted Chinese and international patents and numerous US and international patents pending in the areas of entropy coding, video and image compression and communications.
